Psychologists are expanding a programme to help provide social stimulation for older patients in Salisbury District Hospital and are looking for more volunteers.

The project involves volunteers visiting patients on wards and sitting and talking to them, using techniques such as quizzes, discussion groups and memory games.

It began just over two years ago and initially had five volunteers working on two wards in the hospital. Now there are between 60 and 70 volunteers working on a total of 12 wards.

Volunteers receive training in specialised areas such as dementia, communication difficulties and depression.

Information sessions will take place at the hospital on February 5 from 10am to noon and February 7 from 2-4pm. For details, call Tora Mathias-Jones on 01722 425105 or email engage@salisbury.nhs.uk
