Sherston cricketer’s dream of cups

Former England and Yorkshire cricketer Paul Jarvis is turning a historic pub into a tearoom and B&B in Sherston.

Mr Jarvis and his wife Caroline have moved into The Angel and are renovating it with the aim of opening Sherston Tearooms in March, with The Angel Bed and Breakfast to follow in April.

The couple also run meat producer Sherston Rare Breeds, which was set up in 2010, and aim to use its meat and produce for the businesses.

Mr Jarvis, 48, said: “We bought The Angel two years ago. It’s only been recently that we got planning permission for the change of use. I’m really excited about it.

“It’s not many hotels can say the meat they produce is from their own farm.”

The Angel has been used as office space for businesses for the last 20 years, and prior to that was an old coaching inn.

“We were quite keen to bring the building back to a similar use to when it was an old coaching inn,” said Mr Jarvis.

“We moved to the village having bought the small holding in 2010 and we were just renting at the time, until we saw The Angel was for sale and we thought it would be a good business opportunity.

“We really enjoy the small holding and the idea of the B&B; it’s a nice lifestyle.”

Sherston Rare Breeds provides the refreshments and hot food at Sherston market once a month.

“The village market is really our chance to test out our skills in making cups of tea,” said Mrs Jarvis, 45, who works in London.

“I’m really excited about it. It’s all starting to take shape. It’s been a long time in the making and the workmen are all on site so the vision is becoming a reality.

“We saw that there was a gap in the village in terms of accommodation and we felt the village needed a tearoom, and it’s always been my dream to have a little shop of my own.

“I can’t wait.”
