Four children and two adult translators from Belarus have returned home last week after a Christmas holiday as guests of Royal Wootton Bassett families.
Alina, Daniel and Raman are orphans, who live with foster families in Belarus, while Arina is a member of a large family.
All play in the orchestra that was formed as part of the Zaslowya Project, for which a music camp is organised each summer by volunteers from the area.During their break, Arina delighted an audience at the Methodist Church, where she sang a solo at a music concert.
The Belarussians had a memorable time in England, where their hosts organised many trips, as well as welcoming them to share in Christmas festivities.
A day trip to London included a visit to the Natural History Museum and a ride on the London Eye. They also had a trip to Bristol and at Swindon they visited the Steam Museum.
At Roves Farm, they were invited to perform their own Nativity play, in Russian, with real animals including sheep and a cow.
“It was a magical experience,” said Fiona Fleet, who goes to Belarus each year for the music camp.
A programme of fundraising is under way to finance the next music camp, which is planned for July.
