A 5km fun run in aid of polio eradication is being staged in February, organised by Rotary clubs including those from Royal Wootton Bassett.

This inaugural event on Sunday, February 23, at Lydiard Country Park, Swindon, is aimed at all the family from the competitive runner to those who wish to participate with young children in pushchairs and dogs on leads.

Organised by the Rotary clubs of Royal Wootton Bassett and District, Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Swindon Phoenix, funds raised will go to the Rotary international eradication programme. February 23 is World Rotary Day.

The event starts at 11am, with registration from 9.45am and a Zumba warm-up from 10.45am.

Medals will be awarded to all those who complete the course.

Entry fees are £10 for everyone aged 16 and over, children £5, five to 15, while accompanied infants up to the age of four take part for free. Sponsorship forms are available.

Dave Fenwick, president of Royal Wootton Bassett and District Rotary, said: "Since 1988, in partnership with the World Health Organisation and the Gates Foundation, Rotary has supported this dedicated programme of education and vaccination which has enabled the worldwide immunisation of 2.5 billion children against the crippling and often fatal poliomyelitis virus."

Work continues to reach the children in remote and hostile areas of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria and most recently in war torn Syria, helping to eradicate the disease forever.
