Flooding has made several roads linking the villages around Chippenham impassable today.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service had been swamped by well over 200 calls by 4.30am as roads were blocked by rising water and trees ripped out of the ground.

A car went into the back of another car at Goatacre on the A3102, when it had to stop after meeting with flood water at 4.20am.

The River Avon burst its banks at Kington Langley and Christian Malford, making the B4069 through both villages impassable since 4.20am and 5am respectively.

Kingway Bridge on the A429 at Lower Stanton St Quintin is also closed. Cars were still pushing their way through floodwater at the Willowbrook end of Sutton Benger this morning.

Police are recommending against travelling on the B4643 at Patterdown near the railway bridge, flooded since 5.30am.

Motorists are also asked to take care on the A3102 at The Folly, Lyneham as road users are creating waves causing concern to those living in nearby houses.

The council has been advised about flooding at the Lacock Abbey bridge, which closed the High Street just before 10am until further notice.

Several cars have had to be abandoned in the water on the A338 south of Burbage, which has been flooded since 6.40am.

Rising waters have also affected the village of Worton, near Devizes, and Southcross Lane was hit just after 8am near to Trout Farm.

Elsewhere the gale force wind has caused objects to blow onto roads and the Fire and Rescue Service are asking for patience from the public, as they are having to prioritise due to dealing with multiple incidents simultaneously.

Area manager Julian Parsons said: “Our crews have worked incredibly hard in really difficult conditions. “We started receiving calls at around 11.30am on Monday morning. Mainly these were fallen trees and damaged property. At around 2.30pm we started receiving flooding calls all around our service area. “By 4.30am on Christmas Eve we had received around 230 calls.”

In Devizes strong winds have felled a walnut tree at Little Croft, London Road, which had a tree preservation order on it.

Neighbour Clare Gore said: “It was huge and a very old specimen. Only the week before a very large Scots Pine was felled close to it.

“It fell into the ground of The Croft, bringing down the boundary fence, we think it must have been blown down sometime yesterday evening. “The walnut tree was a great asset to this part of Devizes and it is a very great loss.”

A tree was brought down at midnight on the Langley Road-Pew Hill section of the B4069 in Chippenham, and another at 7.25am on the narrow road from Castle Combe to the A420 at Ford.

Just before 1am on the A420 at North Wraxall, a metal fence was blown into the road, and at 8.30am a fence panel and building material was blown into North Street in Calne. All obstructions have since been cleared. Wiltshire Council are advising people who see a blocked road to report the obstruction to them, though it may take some time for the team to reach minor roads.

It can be reported by calling Clarence on 0800 232323, online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/highwaysreportingform or by downloading the new My Wiltshire app through Google Play Store (for Android phones) or the App Store (for iPhones and iPads).

John Thomson, cabinet member for highways, said: “Our teams are working closely with partner organisations to keep the highways clear during this bad weather. The hard work will continue as we strive to make sure our roads and footways stay as clear as possible during the winter months.”

Updates on road conditions are given through the council’s @WiltshireWinter twitter account.
