Hillworth Park in Devizes had a festive look to it on Sunday as the town council held a Christmas in the Park event, complete with snow.

The council’s parks staff had worked their magic to make the park look particularly seasonal with 'snow' created from washing-up liquid but there was a lot more for the dozens of adults and children to enjoy.

There was entertainment from the choirs of Wansdyke and St Joseph’s primary schools, local blues entertainer Benji Clements, First Stages youth musical theatre and Father Christmas in his grotto.

Carole Berry, the town council’s direct services manager, said: “It was magical. The park was really busy in spite of the weather and some people had to queue for up to an hour to see Santa in his grotto.

"The park staff had dressed up as Santa’s helpers so there were plenty of elves around as well as a snowman.

“Many of the children had dressed up as well.”

Those attending enjoyed a barbecue and some mulled wine. All proceeds went to the Mayor’s Appeal.

The event was part of the town council’s programme, subsidised by funding from the Big Lottery. The Park Centre cafe will be open on Boxing Day and a special stargazing event in association with the BBC will take place on January 8.
