A little rain didn't dampen the festive spirit at Pewsey's Christmas lights switch-on yesterday evening.

Pewswey villagers crowded together in the Market Place, around the King Alfred Statue, to see Carnival Queen Katie Hogg have the honour of turning on the lights.

Loud cheers and fireworks were heard in Pewsey as the village was illuminated by the multi-coloured bulbs.

Katie said: "I would like to say thank you to all those who have made a huge effort today as the lights look brilliant."

"I hope everyone has a great Christmas and an amazing new year."

As a new attraction at this year's event, organised by the Lighting Gang, lights were put across the Village's stretch of the River Avon to give it some christmas sparkle.

Merrymakers, at the event, enjoyed mulled cider and also accompanied Pewsey Male Voice and Pewsey Belles Ladies Choir singing in a service which included carols Away in a Manger, Silent Night and festive favourite Jingle Bells.

Nigel Lihou, of the Lighting Gang, said: "Obviously, we are not as big as Devizes or Marlborough but we are pleased to have the lights in Pewsey and hold a switch-on event. I'd like to thank everyone involved who played their part in the festivities.

"I think the lights over the river look fantastic and I'm really chuffed with them."

Before the switch-on, a procession featuring children carrying their homemade lanterns paraded through the village. It began at St John the Baptist Church and concluded in Market Place.
