Girls from a Marlborough Guide unit have been working hard to prepare a little extra help for local wildlife in winter and earn some badges.

The 2nd Marlborough unit used sticks and recycled plastic bottles to make home made bird feeders.

The girls formed teams and using only a hammer and nails transformed a jigsaw of cut wood into des res homes for nesting birds to move into in spring.

Guider Diane Shepherd said: “The project has given them a lot, opening their eyes to the wildlife around them, helping them learn new skills and be part of a good working team.”

The unit has been taking part in a joint initiative between Girlguiding and the RSPB to earn Rustle, Bustle and Squeak badges that, when sewn together, form a caterpillar on their uniform.

The unit faced an uncertain future several months ago but a volunteer has agreed to lead them next year.
