The budget for the proposed skate park for Devizes has been increased by £40,000, bringing the total to £140,000.

The amount has been given to the project, led by Devizes Area Board, by Roundway Parish Council which needed to spend the money by the end of December otherwise it would be withdrawn.

The money was from housing developers as part of Section 106 funding for community improvements.

Most of the budget for the skate park came from Section 106 contributions, while the Area Board has set aside a sum.

The site of the proposed skate park – at the sports pitches in Green Lane – is actually in Roundway although the land is leased to Devizes Town Council.

Parish council chairman Chris Callow said: “It was money that was allocated towards sports facilities in Roundway and rather than lose the money we agreed to divert it the skate park.”

A meeting of the Area Board, on November 25, was told that Wheel Scape had been chosen to be the contractors for the skate park.

A planning application will be submitted in early January and, if approved, the skate park will open in the spring.
