Cyclist Lizzie Humfress has thanked people in Pewsey who rushed to help her when she fell off her bike and fractured her hip in the High Street on Friday morning.

The incident happened at 9.30am and the road was closed for just over an hour while paramedics attended to her.

Mrs Humfress, a Gazette village correspondent, was cycling along the High Street when she caught her foot in the strap of her bag and came off her bike.

Two ambulances were sent out to her and she was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon where she was operated on on Saturday afternoon.

She said: “I’m doing absolutely fantastically. The Great Western Hospital has been brilliant, they are so good here and they can’t do enough for me.

“The fracture is at the top of my femur and the surgeon said it’s a difficult break.

“Apparently I wobbled for a bit and then fell off but I ended up on the other side of the road.

“Everybody came rushing out to help me. Caroline Dalrymple was fantastic and there was a man holding my hand the whole time.

“The worst bit was that my husband, Dave, was coming back from an appointment and he was told there had been a serious accident. He got home and saw my bike was gone so he came running down the road. He was as white as a sheet and I said ‘don’t worry, I’m okay’.”

Mrs Dalrymple owns a soft furnishings shop close to where the incident happened and she rushed out to help Mrs Humfress, who owns a computer repair business with her husband.

Mrs Darlymple said: “Paramedics came very quickly and the police
diverted traffic around the Co-op.”

Mrs Humfress is expecting to be discharged from hospital today.
