It could have been worse says car dealer after Renault smashes into his forecourt
10:52am Tuesday 3rd December 2013 in News
Car dealer Mark Wadman said damage to his forecourt caused by a suspected drink driver could have been a lot worse.
A car, a black Renault Megane, was reported to have been travelling at speeds of between 70 and 80mph along London Road, Devizes, shortly before it lost control on the roundabout at Hopton Industrial Estate and crashed into a lampost and into the forecourt of the Fussell Wadman Peugeot dealership at about 5.20am on Saturday.
The crash resulted in damage to one Peugeot 308 estate and two security posts, estimated to cost £5,000.
Mark Wadman, a director at Fussell Wadman, said: “The Peugeot 308 is not written off, it’s sustained damage to the front bumper and grille.
"Luckily the car that crashed into our premises was square on rather than coming at an angle. If it had come through at an angle it would have hit two or three of our cars and it would have caused a lot more damage.”
Mr Wadman also said it was fortunate that the crash occurred when there were no people about as they could have been injured. The crash did not stop Fussell Wadman opening on Saturday.
A police spokesman said the Megane was not being pursued by the police at the time of the crash and also said two other vehicles were reported as being damaged in nearby Hillier Road the same morning. Police suspect the incidents could be connected.
A 26-year-old Devizes man was arrested at the scene of the crash at Fussell Wadman on suspicion of drink driving and was taken to Melksham Police Station where he was then arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Police are studying CCTV but officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed any of the collisions or saw a black Megane driving through Devizes on Saturday morning.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Andy Lemon at the local crime team in Melksham on 101.
