Sherston market made a welcome return this month after a wait of more than 500 years.

The community event, which was believed to have last been held in the village in 1511, has been deemed a great success, with organisers admitting they were “shell-shocked” by the turnout.

It took place at the village hall on November 16 and profits of about £180 will be ploughed back into the hall.

Village hall committee chairman Martin Rea said: “It was fantastic. We were slightly shell-shocked by the amount of people that came along. It was busy right through to 1.30pm.”

Among the items on sale were fresh vegetables, plants, jewellery, children’s clothing and Christmas decorations.

Mr Rea said: “We decided to hold the market because we felt there was a need for it in the village as a lot of local people produce their own items.”

The next market has been organised for December 14 and it will continue to run on a monthly basis.
