A well-known family business that has been trading since the 18th century has cashed up for the last time in Royal Wootton Bassett.
Wool shop Trow & Sons has closed after the last surviving member of the Trow family retired for health reasons. Mary Trow, who is in her 80s, started working at the shop when she was 14.
Barrie Smart, Mary’s next of kin, said: “It was very sad to see the shop close as it has been a fixture in Bassett for such a long time. But I can understand the decision. Business has been declining for some time.”
The business was established in the 1700s. As well as a wool shop, the family once ran a hardware shop, a funeral directors, and a building company.
