THE annual Cabbage Sunday auction found a new home at the Avebury and District club this year after the usual venue, the New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton, closed for refurbishment.

It was held on September 29 and raised £850, which is being shared between Avebury and District Over- 60s Club, Wiltshire Blind Association and the Prospect Hospice.

The event is a regular fixture in the area. It started many years ago as a challenge between local gardeners to see who could grow the biggest cabbages and other garden produce.

Nigel Fielder, one of the Cabbage Sunday organisers, said: “I want to thank all those individuals who donated items to be sold, or who made cash donations.

“I also want to thank everyone from Monkton and the Over-60s Club who helped by selling raffle tickets or with the auction itself, and Shirley Bunce, who acted as cashier.

“It was especially good to see Chaz Chivers, one of the original organisers of the event, and Eric and Rachel Matthews who owned The New Inn from 1983–1998.”

Donations for the auction were received from Avebury Club, Lloyds Bank, The Red Lion pub, The Three Magpies pub, The Waggon and Horses pub, The White Horse pub and Walter Rose Butchers.

The contents of a drinks hamper were donated by individuals from Winterbourne Monkton and the food hampers were donated by The Avebury Over-60s Club and Avebury Community Shop.
