Pupils at Heddington Primary School, who are learning to care for two new chickens, welcomed them to the school by holding a competition to name them.

The pair, now named Samantha and Ella, are old English chickens and were born at the school earlier this year when pupils helped to hatch 12 chicks in an incubator.

They will live in a coop in the school grounds and pupils will take it in turns to feed and clean them out, as well as selling their eggs to raise money for chicken feed.

Headteacher Ashley Martin said the chickens were given to the school by one of its dinner ladies.

He said: “They are very enthusiastic about them and they like looking after them and caring for them.”

Year 6 pupil Megan Hitchens said: “I remember them when they were hatched. It’s strange how they have grown so quickly.”
