Wiltshire Council rejects investigation into staff morale
Wiltshire Council has rejected calls for an independent review into staff morale.
Councillors at Tuesday’s overview and scrutiny management committee dismissed the motion, put forward by Cllr Jeff Osborn, which suggested an outside body should run a confidential survey amongst staff.
He wanted to see what effect this summer’s 252 redundancies and the subsequent announcement that the council’s corporate and service directors are receiving a pay rise, expected to be around 7.5 per cent on average, have had.
The committee felt that the council’s own annual staff survey, which anonymously quizzes employees and is due next year, is sufficient to gauge opinion, and that an independent review is a waste of the public’s money.
Cllr John Walsh said: “We should keep this in-house.”
Cllr Allison Bucknell said she had faith in Wiltshire Council’s HR team.
Sue Anderson, secretary of Wiltshire’s Unison branch which represents council workers, said: “It doesn’t come as a surprise, but a lot of staff are feeling stressed because of ridiculous workloads.”
