Victory for disabled car park usage
1:00pm Saturday 12th October 2013 in News
Parking signs in Wiltshire are to be reworded after a disabled campaigner’s fight to keep disabled spaces only for use by disabled people.
Sue Simmons, 53, of Parkfields, Chippenham, said the wording was misleading, resulting in able-bodied drivers using the spaces outside office hours.
“At the moment they read, ‘Disabled parking 8am-6pm Mon-Sat’, so people think it’s okay to park in them outside these hours,” she said. “We want them for disabled use all the time.”
Over the past month she has collected about 200 signatures from people using the bays and now Wiltshire Council has agreed to make an amendment within the next six months to clarify the use of spaces county-wide.
A spokesman said: “We can understand people’s frustrations that the signage implies the spaces can be used by anyone outside of those hours. We will now be rolling out new signage which will clearly state only disabled drivers can use these spaces at any time.”
