Chippenham MP lends a hand at Barnardo's store
Chippenham’s MP Duncan Hames gave up his time to support hard-working staff and volunteers at a Barnardo’s store in the town.
He lent a hand at the Barnardo’s store in Lodge Road, Pewsham, to mark the launch of a national campaign organised by the charity Community Service Volunteers.
Community Service Volunteers, which is the UK’s leading volunteering and training charity, has just launched its month-long make a difference, get inspired campaign.
In a bid to encourage others to volunteer Mr Hames helped to sort and price stock at the shop, steam the clothes and serve customers from behind the till.
The shop at Pewsham opened in August and is one of Barnardo’s newest stores.
Acting manager Carol Gillett said since the opening she had received lot of local interest, but she was still looking for extra help from those in the community.
She said: “We welcome people from all walks of life, from students to those who have reached retirement. It can also be the ideal route back into work after a career break.
“Volunteering is a wonderful way to make a positive contribution to society while making new friends and learning new skills.”
Mr Hames said: “I’ve visited a number of Barnardo’s services in the local area and I’ve seen the dramatic difference they’re making to local families, encouraging children to achieve their potential.
“The charity’s shops play a vitally important fundraising role so I’m pleased to show my support today and learn more about the valuable work carried out by their volunteers.”
The shop at Pewsham is open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. To help call 07738 855350.
