Eager Marlborough pupils impress politician

Wiltshire councillor Richard Gamble paid a visit to St Peter’s Junior School in Marlborough as the pupils prepare for their school council elections.
Coun Gamble spoke to the youngsters about his role as Portfolio holder for Children and Families and what it is like to be a councillor during an assembly. Many of the youngsters are standing for one of the nine places on their school council and were getting ready for an election day.
Headteacher Caroline Spindlow said: “The children were very excited to see someone of such importance.
“We try to teach the children how to cope with an election when they reach 18. On election day they will be given proper ballots sheet and each class will take it in turns to vote in secret and put their ballot papers in a ballot box.
“Councillor Gamble was very impressed when the children were asked how many of them were interested in being on the school council and about a quarter of the children put their hands up.”
