Honours for top lifesavers

Marlborough woman Kate Bowers was among the dozens of people awarded for their loyalty and commitment to giving blood.
A total of 51 blood donors from Berkshire, Middlesex, Buckinghamshire, Oxford-shire, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire were recognised by NHS Blood and Transplant after saving or improving the lives of around 12,675 patients between them.
At the award ceremony in Oxford on September 3, Mrs Bowers was honoured with crystal award.
The retired medical underwriter of Stonebridge Close, has made around 80 blood donations over 47 years.
She said: “I was only 18 years old and other people in the office were giving blood so I thought I would too.
“It only takes 3/4 of an hour, three times a year to save people’s lives.”
