Fitness fans feel the burn in Chippenham combatathon challenge
Fitness fans punched and kicked their way to raising £500 for the British Heart Foundation in a double attack on heart disease.
About 65 people took part in a three-hour combatathon at the Olympiad leisure centre at Chippenham, an intensive cardio workout burning up to 545 calories an hour.
Both regulars and newbies powered through the burn driven by the motivational instructors, with their hearts pounding as fast as the pulsing music.
Personal trainer Pru Comben, one of the afternoon’s instructors, said: “It’s like being in your own kung-fu movie.”
The charity event, organised by Olympiad fitness instructor Charley Hobson-Merrett, was a mere half of the six hours instruction she did on Saturday.
Donations were taken for the extra-long session of the fiercely energetic martial arts inspired Body Combat.
Stephen Carville, 42, of Swindon, was glowing in more ways than one as he completed the whole three hours. He said: “Magic! Look at all the smiles, how can you be in a bad mood after that? It’s the most fun you can have in the gym with your clothes on.”
Adele Mountain, 47, of Monkton Park, Chippenham, who regularly does the Body Combat class at the Olympiad with her friend Alison Anglin, 45, said: “At the start your arms and legs are everywhere but you get used to it. We’re toning up now. You feel like you’ve done a really good workout.”
Instructor Liz Moffatt said: “Give it three goes; the first time you feel ridiculous, by the third you’ll feel more successful. You don’t have to do the whole lot. It improves your reaction times and you work all the muscle groups; you do hundreds of crunches in the hour without realising.”
Classes cost £5.80 and run at 9.30am on Monday and Tuesday, 7.05pm on Wednesday, 12.15pm on Thursday, 4pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.
