A quacking start to Malmesbury race
3:00pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in News
Firefighters found themselves putting water into the very river in Malmesbury on Sunday which flooded last year after a duck race was nearly left high and dry.
The emergency service offered its help to Malmesbury Victoria Football Club’s fundraising duck race by pumping water into the Avon to boost the low water level.
It is a far cry from the dangerously high water levels that flooded the grounds last year leaving the club with bills to pay for repairs, prompting the duck race.
Club secretary Julie Exton said: “The fire crew had their hoses in there, trying to blast the ducks up the river at one point.
“After the race we went back to the club and had the fun fair, music and barbecue. It was a lovely afternoon.”
About 200 people raced 600 ducks, raising about £700 for the club. Proceeds will go towards redecorating the clubhouse and restrooms.
Mrs Exton said: “I want to thank everybody for coming along and supporting us.
“You never know when you organise something whether people will come out for it.
“The clubhouse needs to be repainted, and we have to cover all the lost revenue from when it was closed.”
