Calne town clerk goes the distance in memory of friend
Calne town clerk Linda Roberts has raised more than £1,500 for Dorothy House after tackling the Great North Run in memory of close friend Karlie Williams.
Mrs Roberts joined thousands of runners to complete the 21km route from Newcastle to South Shields on September 15 in two hours and 11 minutes.
She decided to run for Ms Williams, who died at the age of 33 from oral cancer and received palliative and respite care from staff at Dorothy House in Winsley.
Almost 56,000 people took to the streets of Tyneside for the Great North Run, including Olympic champion Mo Farah who came in second after Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele.
Mrs Roberts, who has never completed the Great North Run before, said: “He was given a head start so there was no way I was ever going to catch him.
“The crowds along the road were fantastic, I lost count of how many youngsters I high-fived.
“There was no point in the race when I felt I’d had enough. It was a massive buzz and I still need to come back down from it.
“Finishing was emotional and exhausting, thinking about Karlie and also seeing what others were doing to raise money for people they had lost.”
Mrs Roberts was supported on the day by her husband Mitch and her children Gemma, Graham and Stuart, who all travelled up separately to be cheer her on.
Her younger sister Caroline Thompson also ran the race, finishing a minute behind her.
Mrs Roberts said she would also like to thank friends and colleagues, whose donations will help Dorothy House continue its work caring for people with life-threatening illness.
She said: “I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart, the support and generosity has been absolutely overwhelming.
“I think Karlie’s parents were really touched, and I think Karlie was with me on the day because it was so easy. She was with me helping me every step.
“Had she been alive, she would have been one of my biggest supporters. I would say to anyone who wants to do something like that ‘put the training in because you will really enjoy the day’. ”
