Parking spaces to be lost in Devizes
1:00pm Friday 20th September 2013 in News
WILTSHIRE councillors are being urged to approve a plan to remove 11 on-street car parking spaces in the centre of Devizes to allow tourist coaches to park there.
The spaces proposed are on both sides of New Park Street, outside Brownston House and next to The Taste of Bengal restaurant.
That end of New Park Street has been chosen because of its close proximity to the public toilets in West Central Car Park.
The transport group of Devizes Area Board, which has come up with the idea, said coaches would be allowed to park there during the day for a maximum of 20 minutes and then have to move on to park in another car park such as Station Road.
It said the designation for tourist coaches would be for 18 months while a permanent solution is found. The area board has been considering whether changes can be made within West Central Car Park to allocate space for tourist coaches for over a year.
But some business owners in New Park Street say the spaces should be kept for cars.
Andy and Jo Sheppard, of Rangebourne Pet Care, suggested tourist coaches use the bus stop by National Express outside the police station at the other end of New Park Street.
Mr Sheppard said: “What’s the point of taking away spaces for buses to park there for 20 minutes?”
Mrs Sheppard said: “The spaces will be wasted when buses are not using them.”
Tony Bressington, owner of Bressington’s antiques shop, said: “I’m very much against it. Devizes is brilliant at the moment and is one of the few towns you can park in.”
Wiltshire councillor Richard Gamble and chairman of the Area Board’s transport group agreed that losing spaces for cars in return for tourist coaches was a trade off.
Wiltshire and Devizes town councillor Peter Evans said coach operators would be meeting in January to decide which places to go to.
He said Devizes is regarded as a “no-go area” because of the lack of coach parking.
Last week Devizes Town Council’s planning committee agreed to recommend the two areas on New Park Street for tourist coach parking.
The proposal is expected to be rubberstamped at a meeting of Devizes Area Board on Monday at Devizes School starting at 6.30pm.
