Pewsey teenagers to Have A Go at being a firefighter
10:08am Monday 16th September 2013 in News
A dozen young people will ‘have a go’ at being firefighters on today, thanks to a new initiative set up by Pewsey Carnival.
Local firefighters will host the session, which will see the participants tackle a range of firefighting skills, including wearing breathing apparatus, rolling out hose and using hydraulic rescue equipment.
Watch manager Chris Wootton, who is in charge at Pewsey fire station for Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, said the crew were happy to support the Have A Go At Carnival scheme.
“The Carnival organisers wanted to have events specifically for teenagers, and they asked local clubs and organisations to provide taster sessions for young people aged between 13 and 17,” he said.
“For us, it’s a great opportunity to work with this age group, they will hopefully go away with a far better understanding of what we do and the consequences of certain behaviours, and – who knows – we may even see some of them coming back in a few years as on-call firefighters.”
