Ale lover gets go-ahead to open micro pub in Devizes
Planning permission has been granted for a micro pub to open in Devizes town centre.
Entrepreneur and real ale lover Malcolm Shipp, of Sells Green, and business partner Chaz Hobden, brewer at Wessex Brewery in Longbridge Deverell, will convert the former Lignum antiques shop in St John’s Street into the pub. In the cellar will be a bottled beer shop.
The duo were granted a premises licence by Wiltshire Council last month despite a 61 signature petition signed by locals concerned that the micro pub would increase rowdy behaviour.
The planning application was approved on Friday. Three letters of objection were received by Wiltshire Council to the planning application to change the use of the Lignum shop into a pub.
A noise survey allayed the concerns of Wiltshire Council’s environmental health department.
In her report granting permission planning officer Jenny Fivash said: “The prime shopping area would not be detrimentally affected by the loss of this retail unit and the insertion of an A4 use into the area would not cause any adverse harm to the vitality of the area.
“The proposed change of use would not detrimentally harm the character and appearance of the conservation area. The noise report indicates that the building has sufficient insulation to not cause any adverse harm in terms of increased noise.”
The micro pub will be called The Vaults and would not open late, serving alcohol until 9pm Monday to Sunday.
Mr Shipp is seeking to appoint a business manager and hopes to open the micro pub in late October.
He said: “This will be such an exciting development for the town and something completely different for Wiltshire. We have had so many messages of support through our Facebook page and at Devizes Farmers’ Market and I think this will be a regular haunt for many Devizes folk and outsiders visiting the town.”
Mr Shipp, who also owns the Kennet and Avon Brewery, will be holding a small promotional event at Devizes Wharf on October 5 where real ales will be on sale of £2 per pint and visitors will have a chance to win a boat trip that evening on the Kenavon Venture with entertainment from Richard Digance.
