Canal reopens in Devizes after emergency work on lock gate
Canal boaters are once again free to come and go along the Kennet and Avon Canal in Devizes after emergency repairs were completed this morning on a gate on the Caen Hill flight of locks.
The canal had been closed for almost a week after a hire boat became caught on the gate at Lock 44 and lifted it out of position, damaging a component underneath.
Holidaymakers trying to get home after the bank holiday weekend were trapped and many had to leave their boats where they were and drive home.
A floating crane was brought in from Newbury by the Canal and River Trust, which owns and runs the country's waterways, and the work was completed this morning.
