Inaugural scarecrow trail organised by teenager proves a huge hit in Hilcott

HUNDREDS of people met some of their favourite children’s book characters along Hilcott’s first scarecrow trail at the weekend.
The two-day event took place in the village, near Pewsey, and was organised by 15-year-old Matthew Wilson, who was inspired by the Urchfont trail.
He said: “It went really well. We had lots of people turning up and I was really pleased with how it went.
“On the first morning it rained a bit and that put people off coming but later on – when it stopped raining – a lot of people turned up.
“Lots of big groups and families came, I think there were just under 500 overall.”
A total of 29 scarecrows lined the circular route from Hilcott Village Hall.
There was also hot food served at the Seven Stars, an ice cream van and tea and cakes in the village hall.
Matthew said: “At the end I went round the trail because I hadn’t seen all of the scarecrows. I was really impressed.
“People left comments which were really positive.
“The people I spoke to said they really enjoyed it and hoped I’d do it again next year, which I definitely will.”
Matthew did most of the organising himself with help from residents in the village.
He said: “It was hard work but it was fun as well.
“Everyone in the village said they would like it to become an annual event and there’s already been talk of setting up a committee.”
Matthew, a pupil at Lavington School, has wanted to organise a trail for many years but was waiting for a worthy cause to support.
This year he found that cause when it was discovered that his local church in North Newnton is in need of building work.
Matthew said: “We’re in the process of adding up the money raised so I don’t know the total yet, but we’ve definitely made a profit and it looks like a good amount.”
