Man dies after being hit by a train at Chippenham

A young Chippenham man died after being hit by a train near Lowden Hill yesterday evening.
The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be a 19-year-old from Chippenham.
The tragedy happened just after 7.15pm on the line to Southampton. It involved the 6.50pm train from Swindon.
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: “Officers from BTP and Wiltshire Police attended the railway line near Lowden Hill, Chippenham, on Tuesday, August 13, after a report of a person being struck by a train.
“Medics from the [South Western] Ambulance Service also attended and the body of a man was located. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident, which was reported to BTP at 7.16pm, is currently being treated as non-suspicious.
The man has yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged 19 and from Chippenham. His family has been informed.
“A file is being prepared for the coroner.
“The train involved was the 1850hrs Swindon to Southampton Central service.
“The railway lines were handed back to Network Rail at 8.25pm.”
The train returned to Swindon where passengers for Chippenham were put in taxis, while those headed for Bath had to take a train via Hullavington for Bristol and change there. Lines were re-opened at about 8.30pm.
