Picnic in the park to begin Devizes Carnival
2:00pm Wednesday 14th August 2013 in News
Devizes Carnival fortnight gets underway on Sunday with Picnic in the Park.
The event, in Hillworth Park, attracts families who often bring their own picnic and listen to live bands.
Last year’s event attracted a record turnout of 1,000 people, thought to be due to the major refurbishment of the park by Devizes Town Council.
Dave Buxton, artistic director of Devizes Carnival, said: “Hillworth Park is wonderful and it’s being used well. The town council has been holding events there, including live music.
“Quite a lot of people were there on Sunday for a folk festival.”
Picnic in the Park is from noon to 4.30pm. Four bands will be performing, all newcomers to the event. They are After Lark Jazz Duo, The Mustangs, who play blues rock, jazz quintet Radio Banksa and By the Rivers, a six-piece band who play alternative, pop and reggae music.
Devizes CAMRA will be running a bar and the café will be open. Children can pick up some new skills at Steve Kaos’s circus workshop, and returning to the event will be popular children’s entertainer Lady Margot.
Other events happening next week are carnival comedy night on Thursday at the Cellar Bar in the Bear Hotel, arranged in conjunction with Moonrakers Comedy Club.
The headline act is New Zealander Jarred Christmas, who has appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Mock the Week on BBC 2 and 8 out of 10 Cats on Channel 4. Other acts are John Pendal, Johnny Emmett and Dom Lister. Tickets are £10 from Devizes Books or on the door.
The quiz night has been moved to the first week of carnival fortnight and is on Friday, August 23 at St John’s Parish Hall, Long Street, at 7.30pm. It is for teams of four and it is advisable to book a table. Entry is £12 per team. Call (01380) 723099.
On Wednesday the carnival skittles contest is at the Wyvern Club, Church Walk at 7.30pm. Entry is £5 for mixed, four-person teams. Call (01380) 724544.
