A hobby stretching back more than 30 years has turned into a business for Craig Morton.

Mr Morton, 52, and his wife, Debbie, who used to run a coffee shop at RAF Lyneham, have opened Bassett Home Brew & Bottle Shop in Apsley House Arcade, Royal Wootton Bassett High Street.

The store sells beer and wine-making equipment, with pints of beer working out as cheap as 26p.

Mr Morton said: “It has been a hobby of mine for years and I thought I would make it into a commercial venture.

“I started making home brew in the late 1970s when I was a poor airman in the air force at Waddington.

“There has been a resurgence in the hobby. I stopped for a couple of years and then started doing it again because of prices.

“Making your own works out a lot cheaper. You can make beer for 26p a pint and the more expensive ones work out at 50p a pint.”

Beers take about four to five weeks to make and wine can take as little as a week.

Mr Morton said: “Anybody can do it as long as you have access to a kitchen and fresh water.

“We would like to welcome not only experienced home-brewers, but also those who have never made their own beer and wine before, and would like to talk to us and find out how it’s done.”

The couple used to run The Hive coffee shop at RAF Lyneham but when the base closed they lost the premises. Mr Morton was in the RAF until 1997 and his last tour was at RAF Lyneham.

He said: “This has been something I wanted to do for a while but I just had to convince my wife it was a good idea.”

Town mayor Mike Leighfield officially opened the shop with town crier Owen Collier on March 20.
