Devizes student Yasmin Machin has returned from a volunteer project working with the deaf community in the Philippines.

Miss Machin, of Mayenne Place, spent three months working on a project tackling poverty and child sex abuse as part of the Government-funded development programme, International Citizen Service (ICS).

Miss Machin, 22, who is a student at the University of East London, thanked everyone who had sponsored her.

She said the trip had inspired her.

“It was really challenging but rewarding work in the Philippines, and now I’m back home I feel so inspired and motivated by the people I lived and worked with.

“I’m keen to get involved in more volunteering opportunities within my community and apply my new skills.

“I’ve picked up project management, leadership and communication skills as a result of ICS.

“It’s a unique opportunity to work alongside people from a different culture who have requested help from young volunteers to fight poverty and I’d encourage anyone aged 18 to 25 to get out there and do it.”
