Concert kicks off week of cash capers

People across Marlborough and Pewsey are getting stuck into Comic Relief fundraising.

The fourth annual Singing for Laughs concert took place in St Peter’s Church, which featured a cake buffet.

The audience were wowed by music from jazz duo After Lark, Mother’s Jam, Magnificent AK47s, Barbarelle and the town’s community choir.

Vanessa Lafayre, leader of the choir, said: “We raised nearly £1,200 from the generous people of Wiltshire, which is a record for the event. A packed St Peter’s rocked to pop, folk, gospel, and show tunes, and a huge amount of cake was consumed.”

This Saturday the Village Square in Great Bedywn will be full of tempting cakes for the first Great Bedwyn Bake Off.

Organiser Hannah Philips, 31, of Windmill Cottage in Great Bedwyn is hoping to raise £150.

She said: “I wanted to do something and this just popped into my head one evening, probably inspired from the TV programme Comic Relief Bake Off.

“So far everyone has been supportive and generous in their offerings of cakes. Great Bedwyn and Little Bedwyn both have great community spirit.”

Villagers can get involved by making a cake and bringing it to the Village Square anytime after 9.30am and the delicious goodies will be on sale from 10am.

Lots of schools are also getting involved in Comic Relief fun, including St Mary’s School which is holding a superheroes fancy dress day next Friday.

Pupils at Pewsey Primary School are getting into the silly spirit by wearing their clothes upside down and topsy turvy.
