Comic Relief bake-off will be icing on the cake

Schools in the Devizes area are getting into the Red Nose Day spirit and planning events to raise money for Comic Relief next Friday.

Students at Lavington School are taking part in The Great Lavington Bake-Off in which up to 40 students and eight adults will vie to produce 12 cupcakes each.

The cakes will be made to the same recipe but decorated in their own inimitable way.

The baking will take place on Thursday, March 14, and the judging will be done on Red Nose Day itself.

At the other end of the scale, the manager at Heathcote House Nursery School on The Green, Devizes, will be delving into the yuck factor and climbing into a paddling pool filled with custard and jelly.

But Stephanie Hall will not be climbing into the goop unless parents come up with at least £200 in sponsorship.

She said: “The staff group got together to decide what we were going to do on Red Nose Day and they came up with this idea.

“They then nominated me to be the one to get into the paddling pool.

“We are asking parents to raise at least £200, but if they are a few pounds short I probably will still do it.

“We did something like this a couple of years ago and we raised quite a lot of money.”

The afternoon will begin with a pyjama party for the children with Ms Hall’s challenge at 4.30pm.

At Wansdyke Primary School in Downlands Road, children will be dressed up as Wally from the Where’s Wally books and will gather together in the playground for a Where’s Wally-style photocall.

Devizes School sixth form committee has organised an obstacle race, doughnut race, car wash and a treasure hunt on the day.

Staff at the school are also holding events to raise money.

Yesterday, they were baking cakes and in a competition, while in the staff room childhood photos of teaching and support staff adorn the walls with colleagues being asked to guess who’s who.
