Expert to address Devizes transport group event
A TRANSPORT planning expert will speak at a free lecture on February 20 organised by Devizes Passengers.
Professor John Whitelegg is a leading authority on sustainable transport and has written books and articles showing how public transport, cycling and walking can be made attractive and convenient without vast expense.
Jasper Selwyn, chairman of Devizes Passengers, said: “Given the major concern we have in Devizes about levels of air pollution caused by traffic congestion and the prospect of more housebuilding leading to more congestion, we need to get to grips with the viable alternatives.
“It is not adequate just to raise awareness about travelling by other modes if there’s little choice. It’s critical that cycling and public transport are vastly improved so that people have a realistic choice to leave their car at home. “The lecture will be introduced by Maggie Rae, Wiltshire’s director of public health, who has been very supportive of our cycling event and will sum up the role transport plays in achieving a healthier country.”
The lecture takes place at the Corn Exchange at 7.30pm.
A senior member of Wiltshire Council has been invited to make the closing remarks.
Professor Whitelegg will also give a seminar called Getting the Best from Travel Plans, on February 21 at 10am, upstairs in the Corn Exchange.
Spaces are limited. Email katefreeman@ wayconsult.com to attend.
