A total of 19 schools across Wiltshire and Swindon remain closed today as the county returned to workafter Friday's heavy snowfall.

Low and sub-zero temperatures over the weekend saw much of the snow turn to ice and brought extra pproblems to the roads of Wiltshire.

The Wiltshire Council highways team were busy gritting throughout last night, covering many ice-bound estates and minor roads as well as the main routes.

Among the schools closed today are the primary schools of Crockerton and Horningsham, near Warminster, and The Trinity, Devizes.

Wylye Valley Primary School at Codford was opening later, at 9.30am.

Bus services are now running again on their normal routes and timetables where possible, but those that pass through housing estates and small villages may have to stay on the main roads if the roads through those communities are still too icy for buses to negotiate safely.

For more information on individual bus services ring the council’s passenger transport unit on (01225) 718080.
For other council services ring the main switchboard on 0300 456 0100.

Pavements in the county have not been treated and many are extremely slippery. Pedestrians are advised to take extreme care.
