People in Wiltshire are being urged to make journeys only if they are essential as freezing weather is expected to cause widespread ice over the weekend.

They are also being asked to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours.

Freezing temperatures coupled with further snow flurries, mean roads and pavements could be hazardous.

Wiltshire Council is continuing to salt the primary and extended routes and teams will carry on monitoring the situation . Some minor roads are being salted today but motorists are being advised that they should never assume a road has been treated and drive with extreme care.

Pedestrians and motorists are urged to take care if they decide to travel. Council teams have been clearing some footways while town and parish councils have activated their local snow plans using salt and equipment with which Wiltshire Council has provided them.

There is disruption to many services and more details can be found on the "emergency notices" section of Wiltshire Council's website, www.wiltshire.gov.uk.

Wiltshire Council’s twitter account @wiltshirewinter will be giving up-to-date information on the conditions and affected areas.

With the weather expected to remain below freezing for some time, people are being urged to continue keeping an eye on vulnerable neighbours and friends to check they are all right.
