The Calne motorcycle meet has been saved by bikers and residents who have come forward to secure its future.

After a successful meeting at the Lansdowne Strand Hotel last night it was announced that the next motorcycle meet will take place on July 27.

Twenty volunteers have formed a committee to take charge of the event and others have volunteered to help form different task groups.

The event is still looking for funding and the Calne town team will be responsible for finding sponsorship. There will also be a task group in charge of fundraising.

Support flooded in after town councillor Howard Marshall, who has helped to run the meet for several years, put out an appeal.

Coun Marshall said: “The response has been from the biking community and the Calne town team and they are all pulling together to make sure that this year’s bike meeting is a success and has a future.

“It’s what it needed: it’s got new blood, new ideas and enthusiasm now, which is what it really needs. I think it’s going to be even better than it has been, and it’s been pretty good in the past.”
