Families joined together on Sunday to plant 1,000 saplings as part of the new jubilee wood on land next to the Caen Hill flight of locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Devizes.

The day was run by the Canal and River Trust, formerly British Waterways, as part of a year-long project during which 12,000 trees have been planted there to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

Sarah Brice, project manager at the trust, said: “This is such an exciting project to work on, making a completely new woodland in Devizes.

“We have around two-thirds of the woodland left to plant.

“It has been fantastic to see families come along and plant a tree, which will leave a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Among the trees being planted on Sunday were hazel for coppice, cherries, rowan, oak and field maple.
