Demolition work at RAF Lyneham is due to start this month.

Work is expected to begin on some of the most derelict buildings on the site to help limit the time spent on construction period, the Royal Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board meeting heard last week.

RAF Lyneham is being transformed into a Defence Technical Training College, which could see up to 25,000 students visiting each year.

In the meeting agenda, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “As advised at the September meeting, to streamline the construction period some advance works will be undertaken at the site.

"These are still anticipated to include the demolition of some of the most derelict buildings or site infrastructure works, including improvements to the security fence.

“It is envisaged that these could commence at the end of this year and continue into Spring 2013. We will provide further update on these works at the January area board meeting.”

A website has been set up to keep the public informed on progress. The MoD is asking for feedback in a questionnaire which is available online, or from Lyneham Library or Lyneham & Bradenstoke Parish Council.

The spokesman said: “Meetings continue to be held with authorities to agree the scope of the technical assessments that will be prepared to support the planning

Up to 25,000 students a year could be housed at the defence technical training centre, which would be fully established by 2020, with 1,950 students and staff there by 2015, rising to 4,300 when training is fully established.

The Defence Technical Training change programme team is already set up on the Lyneham site.

The meeting also heard that the area board is looking for grant applications from groups of young people for a project of their choice. For more information email penny.bell@wiltshire.gov.uk.

The next area board meeting is at Bradon Forest School on January 23 from 6pm.
