Pupils at Springfields School entertained a senior cabinet member on Monday, guiding her around the school and cooking her lunch.

Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers arrived with armed guards in a bullet-proof Mercedes after attending a cabinet meeting in Bristol with a particular focus on academy schools.

Headteacher Trystan Williams said the children had enjoyed the chance to meet a top politician, who was particularly keen to hear how the school achieved Times Education Supplement Outstanding School of the Year 2012.

He said: “The pupils told the minister how they had been helped at the school.

“They worked incredibly hard to put on the spread they served her.”

Mr Williams also raised the issue of funding for extra classrooms. Although the school has a permanent vocational centre, classes in the main school are all taught in mobiles and he hopes to raise the number of classrooms from nine to 16.
