Members of the Screaming Eagles Living History Group, who help keep alive the memories of American servicemen stationed in Aldbourne during the Second World War, took part in the village’s Remembrance Day on Sunday together with serving officers from the American Army and Air Force.
Aldbourne became home from home for members of Easy Company 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne division as they prepared to join in the war in Europe with many paying the ultimate sacrifice.
The memory of the American troops, whose sacrifices inspired the TV series and big screen movie Band of Brothers, is perpetuated by the Screaming Eagles Living History Group that has an annual march around the Aldbourne and Ramsbury area where the original American troops were based.
On Sunday, following the village’s Remembrance Day service, the history group paraded on The Green with their guest of honour, serving 506 officer Colonel Richard Huston and three officers from the United States Air Force.
Col Huston, who is serving with the USAF officers at the Joint Forces College at Shrivenham, inspected the ‘troops’ before presenting a certificate and an American flag to the Blue Boar Inn for the part it played in the war and for keeping the memory of the regiment alive with displays of photographs and plaques.
