Policeman in rail line death is named
Phillip Salsbury
Phillip Salsbury

Police have confirmed that the police officer who died yesterday on railway tracks in Chippenham was Phillip Salsbury.

Mr Salsbury, 38, was a serving constable with the Central Roads Police Unit at Chippenham Police.

He was not on duty when he died and his death is now being investigated by the British Transport Police.

The train was travelling from Swindon to Weston-super-Mare and had been laid on for the T4 on the Beach concert.

The incident, at Cocklebury Bridge, delayed 26 trains and rail services were affected for around three hours while the British Transport Police and Wiltshire Police were at the scene.

A Wiltshire Police colleague of Pc Salsbury, who was married with no children, said the death was a suspected suicide and added: "This has come as a real shock to all of his colleagues."

A spokesman for British Transport Police, investigating the incident, said: "We are treating this as a non-suspicious death."

Phil was someone I had known since primary school in Plymouth, and we stayed close until joining different police forces as young probationers.
In the last few years work and family commitments made it difficult keeping in touch over the miles.
Phil was a bit of an eccentric but an immensly likeable and colourful guy who was fun to be around.
My thoughts go to his family and friends who will miss him dearly.
I know you are at peace now big fella and I shall always remember you mate.

I didn't know him personally but he came out to a car accident that I had a few years ago and he was a really lovely chap. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.

I worked with Phil at Copenacre when he was in the MOD Police. I saw him again frequently at Lyneham, and he was an extremely qualified Police Officer. I am shocked to hear of this tragedy. RIP Phil

I have just found out and am deeply shocked as will the rest of the ex-Wiltshire officers now serving and living in Australia once they've heard this terrible news. Phil was a very popular guy who will be sadly missed by all that knew him where ever they are in the world. RIP Phil, our deepest sympathy is with your family.
