A MOTORCYCLIST was airlifted to hospital yesterday after he crashed his bike into a lamp post in Chippenham.

The rider, a local man in his 20s, sustained multiple fractures when his bike careered into the lamp post on Avenue La Fleche shortly after 10.30am.

He had been riding his yellow motorbike towards the town centre from the direction of the magistrates court when he lost control on a bend.

Police then shut the road temporarily along with Gladstone Road while they attended the scene.

He was flown to the Royal United Hospital in Bath where his condition is stable.

Police are now urging any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information should call PC Katus at Chippenham Police on 0845 408 7000.

Notice lamp posts tend to be around the outside of a bend. This means they are a high risk item for road users who leave the road, causing many deaths each year - Why not put them on the inside?

Good point maxter. And best wishes to the rider. As a fellow biker, my heart goes out.

I wonder how he managed to lose control: I ride that road every day and it seems perfectly fine in that direction (as you are on the outside of the bend already). Dare I suggest, excess speed as a possible cause?

Im sure the police investigators will determine the real cause. Could have been speed, oil, debris,or one of many other factors.

Lets hope the rider makes a speedy and full recovery.

Indeed Chipsticks - Lets hope he's OK!! - I narrowly missed a lampost when I was 16 on my moped. I actually went between the old concrete post and the new metal replacement some 10ft further back! 'kin scary.

Just as well we still have an Air Ambulance in Wiltshire at the moment that could take him to hospital. We won't have in the future if GWAS have it's way!!
