Wheelers impress in Ilton event

Cycling: Castle Combe Summer Series report - Week 3

A very overcast night and a clash with racing at Ilton meant fewer riders this evening compared to the 118 seniors and 41 Youth riders from last week's programme.

However, the racing was fierce with the 4th category riders enjoying the lead until less than 5 laps from the finish.

Josh Papworth showed that the 3rd category riders can mix it with a very fine 2nd place.

Jon Paine continued his impressive season with another 3rd place.

The race was won by Mark Perry, with Chippenham's Simon Snowden finishing in 5th place.

An interesting addition to the 4th category field was ex England rugby star and now coach at Gloucester Dean Ryan.

Dean's son Conor riding for Cheltenham & Cty attacked from the gun in the Under 16 event and despite a similarly heroic chase from Chippenham's Jamie Richardson Paige, Ryan maintained the front position to the line.

Megan James continued her impressive form in the Under 8's race taking another win from Pfeiffer Georgi.

Chippenham rider Jack Pearce came home in 3rd . In the Under 10s race, Chippenham's Robbert Higgs maintained his recent form to take 1st, while fellow wheeler Peter Kibble finished in 3rd.

Meanwhile Stephanie Higgs took 1st Girl for the Wheelers in the Under 14 race.

This event was the third in the fifteen race series and with Chippenham Wheelers providing Clubmark accredited Go Ride activities for young riders prior to the racing activities, cycling in the West Country looks to be in a very healthy position.
