Marshfield youngsters hang on for win
Wiltshire Youth Cricket League U13 Division One - 35 overs
Marshfield played Malmesbury at Broadleys on Sunday in the second game of the league season.
Weather conditions were perfect for cricket, with the game played on a glorious sunny afternoon.
Malmesbury won the toss and elected to bat on the astroturf wicket.
They made steady progress eventually reaching a respectable total of 171 for 3 wickets.
Notable contributions included a stylish 70 from Theo Blundell while James Gillespie weighed in with a useful 39.
The pick of the Marshfield bowling attack was Harry Smith, who took 2 wickets for 16 runs off 4 overs.
Marshfield commenced the run chase with the loss of 2 early wickets before Kallan George with a 63, which included some big hitting to the boundary, and Patrick Grieshaber with a stylish 51 steadied the ship.
However, the drama was only just beginning.
Malmesbury piled on the pressure with some tight bowling resulting in the steady fall of Marshfield wickets.
Nerves were fraying among the spectators and with Marshfield needing a single of the last ball, Jeremy Bond hit a four to secure a three run victory.
The pick of the Malmesbury bowlers were Theo Blundell who took 2 wickets for 21 off 5 overs while Tom Whitehead took 2 for 35 off 7.
Malmesbury were understandably distraught at the end but they can be duly proud of the contribution they made to what was a thoroughly entertaining game of cricket played in a fine sporting manner by both teams.
