Previous Occupation - He worked as a journalist for the Times Newspaper (Saturday Editor and Home Editor), a campaigner and been a reporter/broadcaster for the BBC. Has contributed to the Times Literary Supplement and The Spectator.

Personal Overview - As a journalist he has worked for local and national newspapers, radio and TV reporting on diverse issues such as EU corruption in Brussells and the threat to small businesses from red tape. He has campaigned strongly for greater personal freedom, to get tough on crime, for a more dynamic economy, stronger defence and a better deal for hard pressed families. He has worked closely with the widow of Philip Lawrence to fight street crime and its causes and consequently has influenced legislation to ban combat knives. He is also Chairman of Policy Exchange which is a centre-right think tank, whose policy areas include policing, local government and fighting terrorism. Has strongly favoured the modernisation of the Conservative Party and is a friend of party leader David Cameron and duly received the Shadow Housing Portfolio in December 2005. Was promoted into the Shadow Cabinet in June 2007 to shadow the newly created department of Children, Skills and Families which replaced the Department for Education and Skills. Despite some speculation that he would be giving up his post for one of his Liberal Democrat coalition partners he took his renamed education portfolio into Government.

Previous Occupation - Worked in sales (1972-1980). Self-employed/Co-Director of a local business (1980-1999). Regional Liaison Officer for Caroline Lucas MEP (2002-2007).

Personal Overview - Replaced the outgoing Caroline Lucas here in June 2010 after she was successful in her bid to become the Green party's first MP at Westminster. He is an experienced Councillor, having led the Green Group in Brighton for a number of years. He has also shown an interest in foreign affairs issues, as a Councillor was active in campaigning to secure the release of Brighton resident Omar Degayes from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. He has also been involved in High Court action supporting families with Autistic children. Within the party, he has been a spokesperson on planning and regeneration as well as a Principal Speaker at the time when the party had not adopted a single leader. He has also been involved in policy development with the party election manifesto. Locally, he he is likely to have gained a good knowledge of his electoral region through his work for his predecessor.
