Previous Occupation - Economic Advisor to the Post Office Corporation (1969-74), worked with the National Economic Development Council (1966-67), Research Fellow at the University of Surrey. Non Executive Director of Lovell Partnerships Ltd (1987-90).
Personal Overview - Likely to be a moderate member, from a traditional Conservative educational and family background. He was in Government until 1986, then recalled as a Whip in 1990. His career advanced under John Major's leadership, and continued in Opposition in Shadowing Defence and as Shadow Leader of the House of Commons (also having Constitutional Affairs added to his portfolio in 1999). Unsuccessfully stood for the role of Speaker of the House of Commons (October 2000), and has remained on the Back benches holding several Select Committee memberships. Was once again unsuccessful in standing for the role of Speaker in June 2009, this time losing out in a run-off to fellow Conservative MP John Bercow. In a surprise move he was reappointed to the role of Shadow Leader of the House of Commons in a September 2009 mini reshuffle and claimed the same role in the May 2010 coalition Government, post he held until the 2012 reshuffle. He however made a prompt return to the Government in October 2012 as Chief Whip, appointed as an experienced pair of hands following the resignation of Andrew Mitchell.

Personal Overview - Replaced the outgoing Caroline Lucas here in June 2010 after she was successful in her bid to become the Green party's first MP at Westminster. He is an experienced Councillor, having led the Green Group in Brighton for a number of years. He has also shown an interest in foreign affairs issues, as a Councillor was active in campaigning to secure the release of Brighton resident Omar Degayes from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. He has also been involved in High Court action supporting families with Autistic children. Within the party, he has been a spokesperson on planning and regeneration as well as a Principal Speaker at the time when the party had not adopted a single leader. He has also been involved in policy development with the party election manifesto. Locally, he he is likely to have gained a good knowledge of his electoral region through his work for his predecessor.
