AS a young man I disliked discussing religion with my mother. I was afraid, that if by some miracle I dislodged her faith, she would then be unhappy. I have a similar feeling about the new traffic lights for London Road, Devizes.
There are those who worship the roundabout as the solution to the problem, whereas it is believed by others that lights are the way forward.
There are some, Peter Fletcher included, while being traffic light believers, who are not aware that in 2018 the roundabout at the end of Windsor Drive will be removed, making it a T-junction with lights. It was never right that the minor road of Windsor had power over the major road of London. The roundabout removal will restore proper order.
So let the two beliefs put aside ill will and uncharitable letter writing and have faith that a roundabout at Brewery Corner and lights on London Road are both solutions in their own right.
If we need proof we live in the Transport Age – pages 61, 62 and 63 of last week’s Gazette confirm this.
Don Jones, in the My Word column, mentions the meeting about the London Road lights; Claire Perry MP talks trains; a shy contributor from Chippenham and Peter Fletcher from Devizes both get serious about roads; Mr Yelland-Bullock had car trouble near Frome; a Monte Carlo gang make it into press and even Gen Gregory mentions mobility in his appeal on behalf of SSAFA.
Motor transport is increasing and here to stay, so we’d better get used to it, have patience if caught up in it, and be charitable to those who have to labour to make it work.
