I AM hoping readers of the Gazette & Herald may help me in a particular quest.
My interest is in four cottages that used to be sited on a valley held by Widdington Farm, some 1.5 miles outside of Upavon.
These cottages were, I believe, built some time before 1886 when the first Ordnance Survey was carried out and then destroyed some time after 1957.
My interest in them is because as a London boy, together with my mother and elder sister, we were privately evacuated to one of them between 1939/1941, and I realise that that was a fair time ago, but as a boy who appreciated all things country wise, it was a magical period for me and one that I look back on with happiness.
I roamed the valleys and hills around this farm and also had to undertake all the tasks which country living made necessary, but loved it all.
I have made two journeys down memory lane, one some time in the 60s and one in 2011 to view the site and of course found that the cottages had been demolished and the site cordoned off with many keep out signs posted.
The last Ordnance Survey maps show a green area depicting trees.
I have visited the Upavon website to see if there are any pictures of these cottages, but cannot find anything at all, so my quest continues for any photographic evidence of their existence. Cameras back in those days were not as numerous as they are today so I am wondering if readers have any information or pictures of this area. Any records of buildings, people or names would be of interest to me. I would be most grateful for any help.
